Bears Helping Babies is a Baylor student-led movement to raise funds for families fleeing the war in Ukraine. The group has partnered with Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian organization that distributes relief items through church partners in Ukraine, to send aid to refugees.
Grace Cusick, a sophomore from Michigan in the Principles of Advertising and Public Relations class where the initiative was formed, said it started as an idea after the class discussion about how they could possibly help.
“We began talking about it and after the idea was thrown out, we just got more and more excited at the prospect of realizing we could actually do something to create change by using the skills we are currently learning in class,” Cusick said.
Their class is focused on an advertising and a communication plan for obtaining donations. The Advertising and PR class has also partnered with another class in the journalism school, Writing and Editing for Online Media. That class will focus on online media presence and content for the project.
Sophomore Luke Araujo, a student in Writing and Editing for Online Media feels that this is a great way for students to get involved in Ukraine aid. Donations won’t stop the invasions, but they can help the cause.
“I can’t pretend to know what it’s like to live with the fear of death looming over my head,” Araujo said. “So while I’m sure the donation of diapers won’t be a game-changer in the invasion of Ukraine, I also know that in the context of our abilities as students, it is the next best thing we can do.”
There are an estimated 3.4 million refugees who have left Ukraine and 6.5 million who are possibly displaced. That comes to a total of 10 million refugees fleeing Ukraine according to BBC news. Families are leaving with little to no resources, including any sort of equipment for their babies.
“I hope that people will donate whatever they can,” Cusick said. “The smallest amount goes a long way. There are around 20,000 students on Baylor campus. Imagine if they all donated a dollar. Imagine if there was a dollar pitched for every alumni. It doesn’t have to be insanely large donations to make a difference.”
According to Samaritan Purse’s website, they are “a nondenominational Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to victims of war, natural disasters, disease, famine, poverty, and persecution in more than 100 countries, with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His son, Jesus Christ.”
This is a call to action to be able to provide relief to those affected by the war in Ukraine. Donate to Bears Helping Babies to send supplies to the millions of displaced and refugee families that so desperately need them.
